happy birthday, theo. [the theo story]

Saturday, February 17, 2018
It's my best friend's first birthday, and because I am both overdramatic and obsessed with Theo, I wanted to dedicate a lot of words to my demonic, beloved creature. We haven't had Theo in our lives for a full year, although I can't remember life without him, but he was born on February 17, 2017.

This dog is so remarkable. He is so smart and yet ridiculously dopey. He's learning to bring things to us on command and recognize things by name. He has a good heart and loves everyone he meets, although he has a preference for blondes that I always laugh about. He's rotten to the core and ornery as heck, but he is sweet and good and loving. He spends most of his days within a few inches of me. If he's not right next to me, he's right next to Pat. He is snuggly and warm and loves to steal blankets off of us when we sit on the couch and hates when there isn't enough room for him right. between. us.

He is the best decision we've ever made.

Happy birthday, my little tater tot.

Now, on to the Theo story.

•••

Last year (or was it December of 2016?) a Facebook friend who I'd met through work of mine adopted a dog from an animal shelter. Her name was (is!) Annie, and she was a Pomeranian mixed with who knows what. But Annie was getting chunky, and after a little while they learned that she was going to have a litter of puppies. (They'd adopted her from the shelter and she had to have been already pregnant at that time. She has now been spayed and is living it up with her siblings and one of her sons!)

Fast forward to one of the first times we laid eyes on Theo. (This photo is lifted from a screenshot from Jill's Facebook Live video. One of many. Thankful for her videos because I was obsessed with these puppies from the beginning!)

From the minute I saw photos, I knew one of these little puppies had to be mine.

Pat was skeptical. I was obsessed. But look at those faces!

Let's be clear: I adamantly said, after watching multiple Facebook Live videos where one of the six puppies would seat himself in his water bowl (it was the same one every time!), that I didn't want "the dumb one."

We drove from Charlotte to downtown Raleigh on April 20, 2017, to pick one of five of Annie's puppies. (Gus Gus, the chunky orange tater tot who we all loved dearly, stayed with Jill! He is still very cute, but not nearly as chunky as Theo is now. We'll get there later.)

Needless to say, "the dumb one" chose us.

Not much has changed about Theo "Sad Eyes" Pinson-Ladisic-James since Day One. He's still very...

• hungry.
• talkative.
• rude.
• clingy.
• smarter than his humans.
• insanely friendly.
• clumsy.
• fluffy.
• adorable.

We adopted him at 8 pounds, and he now weighs 35. We have no idea what breed he is.

Theo loves...

Blonde people.
Our apartment's maintenance staff.
Looking out the window.
Sleeping from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. every day.
When his parents mix warm water with his kibble.
Skineez toys (which he can't be trusted with anymore).
Tennis balls.
His Kong.
Knee caps.
Hardwood floors.
To be touching his parents, constantly.
Puppy school and both of his trainers.
The vet.
Going to Dunkin' Donuts with his mom.
Long car rides in his hammock.
Paper products.
Blankets.
Socks.
Snow.
Belly rubs.

Theo hates...

Being ignored.
Being brushed.
When his parents leave without him.
When his parents try to load the car before he's in it.
The Roomba.
When the window is closed.
The garbage people.
Sharing the bed and the couch with both humans.
Water.
Baths.
Hula hoops.

Theo's favorite foods are...

Cheetos.
Bright blue star-shaped cookies from the Petco treat bar.
Duck sausages.
Sticks.
His parents.

Theo's hobbies are...

Guarding the apartment from the Roomba.
Knocking tennis balls under the couch.
Keeping his parents in line.
Preventing anyone from using a blanket without his knowledge and permission.
Staring out the window.
Getting stuck in his Jolly Ball.

everything need you to survive adopting (and raising) a puppy

Wednesday, September 13, 2017
I want to start by saying that I absolutely love our dog. If at any time in this post I sound like I don't love our dog... well, just know that he is currently in this phase where he bites your hands while you walk and jumps up on your butt to try and knock you over when you're going down the stairs and he barks at everything, especially if his face is in your face, and he also just smells really bad right now. Really, really bad.

Otherwise, he's great, and I am firmly in the "Everyone needs a dog" camp. Because I did an obsessive amount of research before we brought home our Pomeranian-helldog mix, I wanted to share my advice with anyone who is thinking about adding a floof to their house.

SO YOU WANT A PUPPY... BUT WAIT. READ THIS FIRST.

First: I'm assuming that if you're thinking about getting a puppy, you're ready to get a puppy. If you just think puppies are cute and you'd like one to take pictures of... please, Jesus, don't get a puppy. You're not ready yet. You want to make sure that you've thought about the time and financial commitment to getting a dog.

Ask yourself a few questions:

• How much time can I dedicate to raising it? Am I gone for long periods of time? Do I have the patience or the time right now to be constantly watching my puppy? Am I OK with leaving the puppy in a kennel if I have to be gone for hours?
• Can I afford the necessary supplies, as well as regular vet visits (because as a puppy, you'll be going several times) and the costs of getting your puppy neutered or spayed?
• Do I have to pay a pet fee at my apartment? Most have fees and also pet rent.
• Can I afford puppy training? What about boarding or petsitting if I go on a trip?

Patrick and I adopted Theo when I was about to start traveling every other week, but Patrick was home more often than not, working from the apartment. It luckily worked out for us, although it was exhausting for Patrick when I was gone. In hindsight, we should've waited until my travel schedule calmed down – or maybe not brought him home two days before my first week-long West Coast trip.

Do not take adopting a dog lightly. I've learned that from having Theo and from previous puppy experiences – it is not easy, and you want to be ready.

THE ABSOLUTE NECESSITIES

MONEY. I mean, sorry to be dramatic, but if you don't have the flexibility in your budget to afford the things your dog will need, then you should stop reading and walk away! You don't need to be a millionaire, but the things a dog needs are not cheap, and denying them the things they need will cost more in the long run.

A KENNEL AND/OR PLAYPEN AND/OR DOG GATES. We used Amazon for all of these supplies, which was wise, to say the least. Here's the kennel, the playpen and similar dog gates we purchased. Puppies want to go everywhere but because they, you know, pee on anything and everything, you can't let them have free rein. The kennel is crucial for kennel training – which I wholeheartedly support – and traveling, and Theo voluntarily leaves bed with us to sleep in his kennel every night. The playpen and the dog gates aren't necessities, but I definitely don't think we could've survived without one or both. I recommend buying the kennel like ours above with an adjustable size – you don't want a puppy to be too small for its kennel, because they'll pee in the corner without a second thought.

FOOD. Good quality puppy food is crucial – and no, what they sell at Walmart is NOT good quality. And just because they sell it at Petco doesn't mean it's safe or healthy, either. Do your research (I use dogfoodadvisor.com) and choose a brand that has 4+ stars. Theo started with Natural Balance Original Ultra puppy food and we've since moved him to Blue Basics puppy food because his stomach is so sensitive.

A BED OR BLANKETS FOR HIS KENNEL. You don't have to buy a fancy bed right away – in fact, I don't recommend it, because puppies poop a lot – but definitely have blankets or towels to make the kennel a comfortable place. Make sure everything is washable. I bought an affordable dog bed that Theo really just loves to destroy, so he sleeps on towels, old t-shirts and a superbly fuzzy blanket from Walmart. Everything can be tossed in the washing machine whenever, and we always have backup towels if we need them.

A HARNESS, COLLAR + LEASH. I can't recommend the Lupine brand enough. Here's a collar and a leash, and we like Puppia for harnesses. Lupine will replace any product if your dog destroys it, and they will probably try to, at least a dozen times. Theo is six months old and still loves to try to chew through his leash. And we prefer the soft harnesses instead of the strappy ones because Theo could still chew on the straps.

FOOD + WATER BOWLS. Go ahead and get stainless steel bowls, instead of the cute ceramic ones that you found at HomeGoods. The steel stays cleaner and will foster less gross bacteria than glass or ceramic, even though it's way less cute. I also bought Theo a puzzle feeder that we still use today, because Mr. Gobbles eats far too fast for his own good. Eating fast is good for no dog, especially bigger breeds, and the puzzle feeder keeps Theo occupied for 10-15 minutes while I get my own breakfast or lunch together.

THE FUN STUFF

TOYS. Just skip the fancy "indestructible" toys and don't even bother with the cute toys at Petco or Petsmart. Go to TJ Maxx, Marshall's or HomeGoods and buy out their toy section, or shop for toys on Amazon. They often have great deals on goDog toys that hold up surprisingly well. Theo has a few that only have to be patched up every couple of weeks. I recommend having a few kinds of toys when you first bring your pup home: 1) plush toys. 2) toys they can pull or tug. 3) toys you can play fetch with. 4) hard chew toys that safely be left in their kennel. (I also recommend the Nylabones and Benebones for kennel toys.)

THINGS TO CHEW ON (NOT JUST NYLABONES.)  Your dog may have a sensitive stomach, so be careful, but we use antlers, Merrick marrow bones and Himalayan chews for Theo. Antlers are expensive, but they last forever, although some puppies are far more interested in antlers when they're younger and will chew on anything.

TREATS. Puppies can be really sensitive to anything you give them, so I recommend starting with one kind and seeing how they react to them. It's OK if they get a biscuit at the bank or something here or there, but you want a really small treat or treats you can break up. We like these Wellness puppy bites and Merrick Power Bites, and my parents swear by Natural Balance dog food rolls for Daisy. (Which is great if your pup has a very sensitive tum, because you can feed them their dog food as a treat.)

THE GROSS STUFF

CLEANING PRODUCTS FOR THE FLOOR. I swear by Nature's Miracle Lavender Stain and Odor Remover You can get it scented or unscented, and it is exactly what you need for every puppy accident, I swear.

MORE PAPER TOWELS THAN YOU'VE EVER USED IN YOUR LIFE. Seriously. We went through a roll a day with Theo for a while.

PUPPY PEE PADS. Beware: Don't buy these at Petco or Petsmart, and do not use them exclusively in place of taking your puppy outside. Just use them as a backup, or else you will have to re-potty train your dog when they decide that they can pee anywhere in the house, like Theo did. Amazon Basics work just fine and are super affordable.

POOPY BAGS.
I made a terrible mistake and bought cheap ones when we ran out of our eco-friendly, lavender-scented poop bags. (No shame here.) Pat teased me when I ordered the scented ones but when I got the unscented, very difficult to use cheap ones... well, he was happy to get the lavender-scented ones back. Buy the good ones (they're still affordable on Amazon in comparison with the cheap ones at the pet stores) and suck it up. And please clean up after your dog, you gross human!

THINGS WE COULDN'T HAVE SURVIVED WITHOUT

PUPPY TRAINING. We went to the Petco closest to our house and met the trainer there. It was love at first sight both for Theo and for me and Patrick. The trainer we worked with for Theo's first puppy classes (he graduated from Puppy 1 and Puppy 2) loved our dog and was really fun to work with, not to mention invaluable in helping us work on specific behaviors of Theo's that we wanted to encourage or get rid of. Not every trainer at the stores will be like that, and I don't recommend going to the busiest pet store in your area; find one of the smaller stores with less foot traffic. There are tons of trainers that work outside of the pet stores, too, but you'll pay a little more for those. We would've happily done that if we hadn't met our trainer.

ANTI-DIARRHEAL MEDICINE.
Trust me. Just buy it. Maybe most puppies don't have the absolutely toxic liquid poops that Theo produced on an hourly basis for most of his first six months on earth... but puppies eat shit that they shouldn't, and they will get diarrhea. Have this on hand. You can also give a puppy Pepto or Pepcid but we like this and keep it all the time.

A HAMMOCK FOR THE CAR. I bought this to protect Pat's new leather seats in the backseat of his car. It wasn't very much – most varieties are under $20 – and Theo loves riding in the car because of it. He isn't a huge fan of my car as much because mine doesn't have his hammock! He curls up against one side, the side that faces the air vents, and takes a nap through almost all of our rides.

CAR SEAT BELTS. We started with these adjustable seat belts that latch onto Theo's harness and switched to this anti-chew seat belt once he gnawed through one of the others when we were driving back from Asheville. I don't like how it latches on as much as the ones above (they clip into the buckle like a normal seatbelt, whereas this one clips to the belt itself so there's more movement) but it still does the trick. The hammock above also protects Theo if we have to break.

What did I miss? If you're a dog owner, what were your must-haves?

a day in the life of theodore

Sunday, June 25, 2017

Between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Good morning, humans! Around now, I start rustling. I sleep in the human bed instead of the metal jail cell – a successful guilt trip goes a long way, fur-friends. Mommy, who is usually pressing buttons on her flat object, will glare at me and say, "Theo, no!" while I squirm up between Mommy and Papa and bite them both on the chins, elbows, armpits, etc.

9:15 a.m. My first potty break of the day! I am a good floof and I do not potty in the human bed. It's part of the bargain – if I don't potty in the human bed, I don't have to sleep in the metal jail cell. So, I go now. If I'm lucky, I will scoop up a nice chunk of mulch to snack on while I wait for breakfast.

9:17 a.m. Mommy discovered the mulch and confiscated it. Maaaaaaaaaaan.

9:19 a.m. It's my favorite part of THE WHOLE DAY! Mommy takes me back into our bedroom and I get to climb onto the human bed and clean out Papa's ears. If I'm feeling like a nice puppy, I will snuggle up next to Papa and nibble on his elbow. Most of the time, though, I jump on his head.

9:30 a.m. Mommy fills my water bowl and food bowl with not nearly enough water for how thirsty I am and too much kibble because kibble is the worst. If Mommy is feeling like smart Mommy, she will put a spoonful of pumpkin in my bowl for breakfast. If she is not feeling like smart Mommy, it may be a while before I get my pumpkin.

9:35 a.m. After emptying my water bowl in less than 30 seconds, I settle down to destroy my first toy of the day. I'm feeling like my cheese bone shall be my morning victim.

10 a.m. Mommy takes me on a walk around the apartment complex.

10:20 a.m. I rip Mommy's shirt or shorts or both on the walk back to our apartment, and she puts me in my playpen because she "just can't handle" me when I'm "like this." I'm not sure. I think it means I'm so cute I'm distracting her.

10:30 a.m. Papa is awake! He always walks out into the living room and looks at me like I am his worst nightmare.

10:33 a.m. Papa is sitting on the couch, and I am trying to save him. Did you know that it is very dangerous to sit for too many hours a day? You can get heart diseases and thick calves. PAPA GET UP YOU HAVE TO OUTLIVE ME!

10:35 a.m. I am back in my playpen. I am confused. I am trying to help my parents.

10:55 a.m. Well. That's confusing. I was wrecking havoc on my gorilla toy and then all of a sudden I opened my eyes and I had my cheese bone in my mouth and I was drooling. No time for naps!!!

10:57 a.m. I grab three pieces of food and chew. Mommy asks if I need to go outside. I bark one time because that's what she wants me to do. I don't understand why one bark is more significant than six barks but she insists. Mommy says, "One minute!" and gets up to put on shoes.

10:58 a.m. I pee on the floor.

10:59 a.m. "THEO SERIOUSLY? I SAID ONE MINUTE!"

11 a.m. I stare at Mommy. She looks mad. Go get the paper towels, lady. I waited one minute and then peed. What do you want from me?

11:05 a.m. While Mommy mops up my puddle, I wander into the poop room with Papa and while he washes his hands, I investigate the white chair where my parents go outside. Findings: Not full of poop. Not interested.

11:15 a.m. Papa is in the large white water machine, and Mommy isn't paying attention. I pee on the bath mat. Papa yells for Mommy. I laugh and laugh all the way into the living room.

11:45 a.m. I have been in my playpen for 30 minutes because "nowhere is safe" from my bladder. Mommy complains to Papa, "Two accidents in one day!" She likes to act like this is not predictable, but if she would 1) take less than one minute when she says one minute and 2) make her expectations about my behavior in the poop room a little bit more clear, then I would have less accidents.

12 p.m. Mommy takes me outside and wails in despair when I rip her shirt. It looked delicious. I'm a little disappointed.

12:07 p.m. My parents are walking me towards the metal jail cell and taking off my collar. Wait. Wait. WAITTTTTT A MINUTE WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?

12:08 p.m. Help. I am trapped. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

1:15 p.m. Oh thank furry Jesus my parents are back!!!!!!!!!!!!

1:16 p.m. Just because I am thankful they are home does not mean I don't still hate them. I still hate them. But I give them a "HELLO!" pee on their shoes and try to tackle them, because what if something were to happen to them and I never get to see them again? What if they sit down for too long and their hearts explode? I gotta give them HELLO pees while I can.

1:20 p.m. Papa took me outside to apologize for leaving me in jail and I try to give him a delicious piece of mulch I find on the ground. Instead of appreciating it, he tosses it away! Jerk. I run off to grab it again and he is mad. Papas are so confusing. Mixed signals, Papa!

1:27 p.m. Papa and Mommy sit on the couch with their book machines. I try to help them press buttons but they keep pushing me off and handing me my hecking cheese bone. I thought they would appreciate the extra paw but apparently not. No one appreciates a good helpful pupper around here.

1:33 p.m. Mommy, who was not a smart mommy this morning, puts a spoonful of pumpkin in my bowl with my lunch kibble. She thinks that she can fool me into eating my lunch kibble and also distract me from torturing them. No such luck, fluffy-haired human! I eat all of the pumpkin and just three pieces of kibble and chew thoughtfully.

1:55 p.m. Mommy asks me very nicely to "be quiet" because she "has a phone call." Her phone calls always involve me in some way. But I am not allowed to say hello to whoever is on the other end! Isn't that the worst? So, I settle down as close to her as I can possibly get and gnaw loudly on my cheese bone.

2:12 p.m. When the phone call starts and Mommy is in the middle of presenting something, I start to squeak my ducky toy. SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK.

2:13 p.m. Papa confiscates the ducky, and Mommy is apologizing for her loud pupper. I bark an apology, and Mommy glares at me. I thought that was good manners!

2:30 p.m. After a stressful afternoon, I curl up into a small pupper ball by Mommy's feet and take a snooze. She assumes I am wreaking havoc somewhere and jumps up to look for me and wakes me up. I give her a pupper evil eye.

3:45 p.m. GOOD MORNING, WORLD! IT IS TIME TO RUN!

3:47 p.m. Woo! I am exhausted after running in circles for 2 whole minutes. And oh, hello, I suddenly have the crazy urge to pee! Bark! Bark bark!

3:48 p.m. I gave you one minute, Mommy.

3:50 p.m. "THEO! NO!"

3:51 p.m. *pupper shrug*

4 p.m. Papa takes me on a walk around the apartment complex and I got to see my bestest buds, the maintenance guys. They are just the best. I always pee on their shoes and they are so appreciative of my tinkles. That's how you know someone is your bestest bud!

4:15 p.m. Papa brings me inside and I am so excited to see Mommy, it's like I haven't seen her in days! or years! Hi, Mommy! Mommy rubs my belly and tries to play with me. I am so excited that I give her teeth kisses. She is angry about the teeth kisses. I try to apologize but all I have is teeth kisses!

4:17 p.m. After emptying my water bowl in .3 seconds, I think it's a great time to pretend like I have to pee again. Bark! Bark! Bark!

4:18 p.m. Mommy glares at me but takes me outside. I tricked her!

4:19 p.m. I lunge down the sidewalk because HUMAN!!!! I love our house. We have lots of roommates and there's a 90 percent change they will stop to pet me and tell me how cute I am.

4:20 p.m. This was a bad human. They did not even LOOk at me! How rude.

4:22 p.m. Mommy says she is tired of my poop and takes me back inside. I sit down on the ground and give her my trademark Theo sad eyes.

4:45 p.m. Mommy and Papa are sitting on the couch watching the food channel. Mommy is pretending to work on her book machine but I know that she is thinking about dinner and I know that Papa is thinking about golf. They are predictable humans. Sad eyes. Saaaad eyes. Bark! Bark! Bark!

4:47 p.m. Papa hands me my cheesey bone as if I don't know it exists. I climb up on the couch and pretend to chew on it but instead I am chewing on the ottoman. They do not notice.

5:00 p.m. They noticed. There is a hole in the corner of the ottoman and Mommy is giggling and Papa is thoroughly not happy. What's a puppy supposed to do? Just sit there and eat his cheese bone? Life gets boring when you behave!
